Time seems to stand still in this walled village established in the year 620 by the Irish monk who remains the Patron Saint. The bus winds down the steep granite cliffs, but of course cannot enter the village, because who ever imagined something as big as a bus when the entrance was made? As we walk through the entrance, we are transported back in time, yet the village is very much alive and well in this year of 2012. The cobblestone roads lead us to small platzes where outdoor cafes, hotels, and antique shops mingle with milk, bread, and cheese shops. A footbridge (also wide enough for horses in the day...) leads us across the river, where we find a nice place to sit and eat our lunch. One of my favorite books is "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett. This historical novel tells the story of a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known. The story could have been written about this village and its church, built when arches and pillars were just being tried out in architectural structures. Angela and I spent a good deal of time in the church where Catholics have worshiped for nearly 1400 years. It is truly a beautiful and sacred place. The bus and then the train whisk us back to present day and the modern conveniences of this age, making our heads spin at the contrast. A memorable day, to be sure.
I am off now to explore the city of Basel on my own. Armed with a map of the city, a trolley and bus map, and Angela's cell phone for good measure, I am going out exploring - Does anybody out there understand English?? We'll soon find out! Love, Liz
