The earliest residents of Gordes, a beautiful village built on the limestone cliffs of Luberon would be 8,000 today. If these stone walls could talk, what a history this stronghold could report! It almost didn't make it - after surviving the Religious Wars, the Plague, two earthquakes, and an air raid in World War II, it was a lagging economy that almost killed it. In need of expensive renovations, and certainly not very accessible with a very ancient narrow winding road, it was almost abandoned in the early 20th Century. Soon it was "rediscovered" by artists and well-to-do visitors and the media, and is now considered a very "chic" place for a summer home, not to mention its tourism attraction. The houses appear to be built on top of each other, with steep winding cobblestone streets connecting it all. These streets are so steep that in the center of the road is a wide and deep staircase, to enable to horses to climb the steps, while the wagon wheels rolled smoothly along the width of the road. We had a wonderful day wandering around, enjoying the shops, even having a coffee in a cafe with a terrace overlooking to whole valley below. Magnifique!
