Fit for a Queen
Masterworks of Bermuda, is the National Art Gallery of Bermuda. The Founder and Director, Tom Butterfield, is to be invested by the Queen of England next week at The Order of the Investiture in London. Elise Outerbrige is the Assistant Director and will be representing Masterworks with Tom. When she learned that current Artist in Residence Judith Paixao also makes fascinators, she commissioned Judith to create a fascinator to represent Bermuda. All week Judith has been planning this creation, and today is the day to make it. Judith is as nervous as if she were to be seeing the Queen herself! This picture of her creation doesn't do it justice - it is truly beautiful! A better picture of the fascinator is on lizizlog.blogspot.com. love, Liz
Liz's Log - Old Bermuda Bottles
For hundreds of years inhabitants of Bermuda have been throwing their used bottles overboard. Whether thrown from land or tossed from a ship, you do not need to go far to find these little treasures along the shorelines of the earliest settlements. Steve McPhee lives in Bermuda and has been diving for bottles for over twenty years. He is the author of the premier guidebook on the subject, and was interviewed by Kev for the film Kev is making on the Glass of Bermuda. On Wednesday, Steve picked us up in his boat and took us to one of his favorite diving spots. This day was to film him diving and bringing up some bottles. Jeff donned his wetsuit and snorkeling gear and, using Kev's underwater camera, followed Steve and filmed him. Judith borrowed some of Steve's snorkeling gear and joined them. These hand blown bottles pictured were found, along with some black glass bottles from the 1780,s. We learned from Steve about the history of bottle making, how to identify and date the bottles, the shipwrecks, and the early history of the islands. As a finale to an already amazing day, Steve took us by boat around through the islands showing us the oldest houses and telling us about those early settlers. It was an amazing day and we have the rarest of mementos to bring home. love, Liz
Liz's Log -Bermuda!
Our most wonderful week in Bermuda is almost over, and my son Jeff and I have been busy with adventures almost every minute of every day. My good friends, Kev and Judith, who live with me in 29 Palms when they are teaching the film making arts to Wounded Warriors, are currently living and working in Bermuda as Artists in Residence. They have been given a studio and apartment in the town square of St. George's - an ideal set-up in an ideal location! Kev and Judith sailed their 38 foot Island Packett "Viagem" over to Bermuda, and are living aboard her, so Jeff is staying in the apartment, while I have returned to my "stateroom" aboard Viagem, where I have stayed when joining Kev and Judith on other sailing adventures. Thus we have the perfect set-up to go snorkeling, search amazing sea glass beaches, dive for 200 year old bottles around ship wrecks, have a "scooter day" to see the islands, and enjoy a wonderful visit with Kev and Judith. Please visit lizizlog.blogspot.com to continue along with the fun! love, Liz
